About ARBOR

ARBOR is a new outreach service for people bereaved by suicide. It works closely with other support services and the community to provide support services especially for people bereaved by suicide.
If you have lost a loved one by suicide ARBOR can walk alongside you through this difficult time and provide additional support if needed. Counsellors and Peer Supporters are on hand to provide this support.
ARBOR aims to help those newly bereaved to access the support, resources and assistance they need while reducing the isolation often felt at this time. ARBOR provides an outreach service for family and friends who lose a loved one by suicide. Referrals can be made by calling ARBOR directly or through the Coronial Counselling Service in WA.
History
The need for support for people bereaved by suicide has been on the agenda of the Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention (MCSP) since the late 1990’s. After conducting a needs assessment with people bereaved by suicide MCSP received funding to develop the Information and Support Pack for People Bereaved by Suicide or Other Sudden Death. MCSP then began to tackle the idea of an outreach service. Inspired by the work of Dr Frank Campbell in Louisiana, USA, MCSP sought funding to develop a similar service in Perth.
ARBOR began operating on October 22nd 2007 and has been funded until May 2009. Funding has come from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing through the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. The Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention (TICHR) and the Centre for Developmental Health (Curtin University) is managing the project.
